〈방의 잔상〉: 고립된 방에서 피어난 생존의 기록

〈방의 잔상〉 시리즈는 대학 시절 겪었던 극심한 신체적 고통과 정신적 번아웃 속에서 만들어진 자기 치유의 기록이다. 작가는 매트리스에 누워 하루를 버티며, 창밖에서 들어오는 빛과 라디오 너머의 소리에 의지해 조금씩 삶의 감각을 회복해갔다.

당시 방 안의 장롱과 이불 그림자는 커다란 동굴이나 살아 있는 살덩이처럼 느껴질 만큼 두렵게 다가왔다. 다시는 일어날 수 없을 것 같던 시간 속에서도, 작가는 벽에 세계지도와 우리나라 지도를 붙이며 언젠가 다시 세상으로 나아갈 미래를 상상했다.

특히 초기 작품인 〈방의 잔상 I〉에서는 볼펜 선묘 특유의 날카롭고 예민한 감각이 드러난다. 이는 현재 작가 작업의 중심인 ‘수행적 점묘’와 ‘생명력의 축적’이 어디에서 시작되었는지를 보여주는 중요한 출발점이 된다. 지금은 따뜻한 기억으로 남은 방도, 당시에는 공포와 고립이 스며든 공간이었다. 같은 장소라도 인간의 감각과 기억에 따라 전혀 다른 풍경으로 남을 수 있음을 보여준다.

〈Afterimage of the Room〉: A Record of Survival in Isolation

Afterimage of the Room is a series created during the artist’s college years, when she was suffering from severe physical pain and mental burnout. It is a personal record of healing and survival. Lying on a mattress for long periods of time, the artist slowly regained a sense of life through the light coming from the window and the sounds of the radio.

At that time, the shadows of the wardrobe and blankets in the room felt frightening, like a dark cave or a living mass of flesh. Even during days that felt impossible to escape, the artist placed maps of Korea and the world on the wall, imagining a future in which she could one day return to the outside world.

Especially in the early work 〈Afterimage of the Room I〉, the sharp and sensitive quality of the artist’s ballpoint pen drawing stands out. The work reveals the starting point of the artist’s current practice, rooted in “performative stippling” and the accumulation of vitality. A room that now remains as a warm memory was once filled with fear and isolation. The series suggests that even the same place can become a completely different landscape depending on one’s memories and state of mind.
